Should I take Pass Plus once I've passed my driving test?

New drivers can take a Pass Plus driving course at any time, although it’s thought to be most useful within the first year of being on the road. It is designed to support a new driver’s developing skills. As learner drivers, for example, are not legally allowed to drive on a motorway with a provisional licence, Pass Plus gives them the opportunity to gain experience, as a qualified driver, whilst being directed by a professional driving instructor

Pass Plus

Pass Plus is a non-compulsory course which new drivers can take to gain extra driving experience. The course takes a minimum of 6 hours to complete and covers 6 modules:

  • In town
  • In all weathers
  • On rural roads
  • At night
  • On dual carriageways
  • On motorways

But I’ve already done the learning?

It’s important to remember that the learning process doesn’t end when you get your shiny new pink licence. In fact, when you get on the road as a newly-qualified driver, the learning continues. Driving skills come with experience, and the only way to get that is by getting out there and driving.

The role of Pass Plus is to ease you into the transition of learner to driver, providing more advanced training and giving the new driver an extra boost of confidence.

Will Pass Plus reduce my insurance premium?

Completing a Pass Plus course does not mean you automatically qualify for a discount on your insurance premium, but some insurance companies do offer discounted rates to drivers who have undergone the additional training. How much discount depends upon how much weight the insurance company attaches to Pass Plus, and how much your original quote is.

One way to look at it, however, is that the more professional tuition you have on the road, the less likely you are to be involved in a collision, and, therefore, the less likely you will be to make an insurance claim. This, in turn, will help to reduce your insurance premium in the future.

Will I have to take another test?

You do not need to take a test at the end of your Pass Plus training, as completing the 6 hour course depends upon an assessment of your skills. Your driving instructor will assess your progress during the course, making sure you reach a certain standard before completing each module.

How much does Pass Plus cost?

There’s no standard price for a Pass Plus course, as, like driving lessons, rates vary depending on where you live and what your driving instructor’s hourly rate is. Your local council may well offer a Pass Plus discount, so you should look into whether this applies to your local area.

You will need to take the Pass Plus course with a Pass Plus registered approved driving instructor.
