Learning to drive in Portsmouth

Portsmouth is quite a large and busy city with plenty of surrounding motorways and dual carriageways for you to get some more advanced driving skills under your belt. But don’t let that put you off if you are just starting out, there are a plethora of quiet residential streets for you to learn the basics on.

Our top tip is to avoid the Gunwharf Quays area if you’re relatively new to driving, especially on the weekend, because it will be busy, especially during the school holidays. Southsea and Eastney have lots of residential areas which will be quieter during the day mid-week after the morning rush hour and school run.

Manual and automatic driving lessons

Get in touch with one of our Portsmouth driving instructors, they’re waiting for you!

Once you’re ready to get behind the wheel, make sure you’re up to speed on which type of car you’d like to learn on. Some people prefer the ease of driving in an automatic because there is slightly less to remember compared to driving a manual car. But choosing an automatic means that once you qualify, you will only be able to drive this type of transmission, and automatic cars are generally more expensive when compared to manual ones. By choosing to learn to drive in a manual car, you can save a bit of money on driving lessons and there are more manual driving instructors available to book lessons with too.

I found it so helpful to take my driving lessons and use the app afterwards to join up my learning. The route tracker and theory test app were so helpful.
