Did you know: Midrive learners pass in 17 fewer hours than the UK average, saving time and money! Find out more.
We’ve put together a list of 10 of the worst learner cringes so that you can feel a bit better about that time you called your instructor dad.
#1. Your driving instructor picked you up from school
Logistically, it made sense. Realistically, your mates took the piss. You never arranged a driving lesson form school again, because if there’s one thing worse than your mates catching your mum picking you up in her Nissan Micra, it’s you driving away with your L plates firmly attached whilst praying you don’t stall.
#2. The awkward text
Ever accidently text your driving instructor giving them three kisses – or worse, a winky face at the end? Or have you ever fallen foul to curse of auto correct? We’ve all been there. The best way to deal with this is to pretend it never happened!
#3. You have nightmares about stalling
The thought of stalling can be terrifying to a learner driver, but we’ve all experienced the horror of feeling the car cut out when the lights turn green. There’s not much you can do about this – you’ve just got to style it out. People will probably beep at you, but they’ll get over it.
#4. Forgot you had a driving lesson… still in your PJs
We happen to know that this is very annoying for driving instructors, but it seems to be a condition which many teenagers suffer from. Waking up to your mum telling you Dave the driving instructor is at the door and realising you’re still in your Spongebob pyjamas is not ideal. Get dressed, brush your teeth and pretend you’ve been awake for hours.
#5. You spent your lesson money on shoes
That money your auntie Joan gave you was supposed to be for driving lessons, but instead you bought those New Look heels that you just had to have. You had to ask your mum for more money and then lie to Joan about how useful her lessons money was.

#6. Your driving instructor calls you the wrong name
The first time he called you James you gave him the benefit of the doubt, but now your name is saved as James in his phone and he’s started calling you Jimbo. It’s gone too far to correct him and you dread the moment he looks at your provisional and finds out who you really are.
#7. You asked your dad to give you a lesson
This was more of a mistake than an embarrassment. He ended up shouting, you cried and refused to drive any further. He spent the next three months telling other family members how much of a drama queen you are.
#8. You momentarily forget your lefts and rights
It’s happened to the best of us. You’re approaching a junction and your instructor tells you to turn right. You have a cheekily L check on your hands, and congratulate yourself for successfully turning the right way.
#9. You missed the gear stick
Grabbing your instructor’s leg instead of the gear stick is probably the holy grail of embarrassing learner moments. There’s not really any right way to deal with this, but maybe try learning to drive in an automatic if you’re a repeat offender.
#10. You passed your test and kissed your examiner
OK so you got a bit caught up in the moment, but who cares!? You just passed your driving test!
